Civility pledge is part of coffee party agenda

The tea party movement not your, well, cup of tea? How about coffee instead?

The coffee party movement is more than a spoof on the conservative tea party movement, organizers say.

Over the past six weeks, more than 160,000 people have signed up on Coffee Party USA's Facebook page.

The group wants to increase the influence of regular citizens in politics and government.

Organizers push for reasoned discussion about issues and asks members to take a civility pledge, which states in part:

"I pledge to be ... respectful toward people with whom I disagree. I value people from different cultures, I value people with different ideas, and I value and cherish the democratic process."

On Saturday , some 350 coffee parties were held nationwide.

Groups listed priorities they felt needed to be addressed in the political arena in consensus-building exercises, said Leo Pierson, a coffee party spokesman and a sociology instructor at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College.

Some of the meetings had 30 to 50 members; others managed just a few participants, Pierson said.

Andy Killham, 29, of Carol Stream, Ill., became a Chicago chapter member recently by joining a Facebook fan page.

The chapter has more than 1,200 fans. Killham, who said he feels the tea party movement is too anti-government, said he hasn't met any fellow members in person yet, though he plans to attend a gathering this week.

The problem with the Coffee Party is that they are totally clueless about what we at the Tea Party Movement are all about. They said it in their civility pledge - we believe in a democracy - that proves they are clueless and a product of the nationalized education system in this country. Our country is a Constitutional Republic NOT a democracy. We do not want government to run our lives - our Constitution gave very few powers to the federal government for a very good reason. They really need to read the actual words of the founding fathers and the actual documents - not the liberal interpretation taught in our public schools. Once they accomplish this task - if they do not like what the documents say - they may want to move to another country that is more in line with their thinking. I think true Tea Party activitists are aware of this - if not - keep sounding the alarm to warn them (I've already gotten the message - thanks.)
