Shocker: Mick Jagger needs a heart-valve replacement, and that’s free in Britain . . . but he’s having it in New York

Well this is strange. A certain Michael Jagger is an English gentleman, and he needs a medical procedure, as it quite common for men like him who have reached the age of 75. Specifically, Mr. Jagger needs a heart-valve replacement.

Now, you understand, Great Britain has the National Health Service, which provides health care services to the public free of cost. The government pays for everything. So hey, if you’re 75 years old and you need an operation done, at least you don’t have to worry about what it will cost!

Call, make an appointment, go in and get it taken care of. Then leave happy and healthy, with a new heart valve and no bill in your hand.

And yet that doesn’t seem to be Mr. Jagger’s plan. Despite being English, and thus entitled to free services from the NHS, he is choosing to fly to the United States and get his operation done here – where he will have to pay for it!

Why would this elderly gentleman make such a strange decision?

Mick Jagger is set to undergo heart valve replacement surgery this week after postponing The Rolling Stones’ US tour, The Sun can reveal.

The 75-year-old rocker will be having the op in New York and is expected to make a full recovery.

A source told us: “Mick will be undergoing a non-invasive heart valve procedure. The prognosis is good and this kind of surgery has a high success rate.”

Sir Mick Jagger hopes to be out of hospital 48 hours after heart surgery this weekend — then back on stage by the summer.

Now I’m sure you’re getting ready with the seemingly obvious answer: Mick Jagger doesn’t need free health care because he’s fabulously wealthy!

Well of course he is. But that begs another question: Why is the health care you pay for with your own money in America better than the health care you get for “free” (via the taxpayers) in Britain?

And the answer is obvious: Making anything “free” by removing cost incentives and imposing price controls skews all rational market incentives. Demand for health care services in Britain constantly outpaces the system’s capacity to deliver them, while the NHS is rife with politics and inefficiency. This is why they ration care according to a number of factors, one of which is the patient’s age when it comes to certain procedures.Since Mick Jagger is 75 years old, it may be that the system would consider him a poor candidate for a heart-valve replacement given the low likelihood that he would live many more years with it.

(Then again, Keith Richards appears to have been dead for at least 15 years and he still tours and plays guitar.)

If you are 75 years old and intend to live a long and full life of many more years, the American health care system allows you get the care you need to pursue that goal – provided you can pay for it, of course. A system run by government bureaucrats may not allow you to get the care you’re interested in, regardless of your ability to pay.

We certainly wish Mick Jagger well and hope he has a successful procedure and a great U.S. tour when the Stones finally make it to the States to play. If he wants to still be rocking at 100, we say more power to him, and we hope there will always be a health care system that provides him with the care he needs to pull it off. That’s why we hope Democrats never get the opportunity to re-shape American health care any further than they already have, because that might close off the freedom of men like Mick Jagger to get the care they need.

And if you’re asking why he should be able to get an operation just because he has the money, the answer is: Because he earned the money and he can do what he wants with it. You should try it.

Meanwhile, I must say the Stones have never been one of my favorite bands, but I’ve always had a soft spot for this song. Get well soon, Mick!
