ATLANTA – Herman Cain has run a pizza chain, hosted a talk radio show and sparred with Bill Clinton over health care. He's never held elected office.

Now the tea party favorite wants to be president.

"In case you accidentally listen to a skeptic or doubting Thomas out there, just to be clear ... I'm running for president of the United States, and I'm not running for second," he told a crowd at Centennial Olympic Park on Saturday. Chants of "Herman" erupted from the crowd of thousands in downtown Atlanta.

The announcement by the businessman, author and talk radio show host that he was joining the expanding Republican field came after months of traveling around the country to introduce himself to voters.

Now the 65-year-old will see if he can use that grass-roots enthusiasm to turn a long-shot campaign into a credible bid.
Cain supports a strong national defense, opposes abortion, backs replacing the federal income tax with a national sales tax and favors a return to the gold standard. He said President Barack Obama "threw Israel under the bus" because he sought to base Mideast border talks partly on the pre-1967 war lines, and criticized the Justice Department for challenging Arizona's tough crackdown on illegal immigration.

"We shouldn't be suing Arizona," he said to cheers. "We ought to send them a prize."

Cain lost a three-way Republican U.S. Senate primary bid in Georgia in 2004 with one-quarter of the vote. His "Hermanator" political action committee has taken in just over $16,000 this year. He said he's running "a bottoms-up, outside-the-box campaign." Supporters say he taps into the tea party-fueled desire for plain-speaking citizen candidates.

Born in Memphis, Tenn., and raised in Atlanta, Cain is the son of a chauffeur and a maid. He attended historically black Morehouse College, earned a master's degree from Purdue University and worked as a mathematician for the Navy before beginning to scale the corporate ladder.

He worked at Coca-Cola, Pillsbury and Burger King before taking the helm of the failing Godfather's Pizza franchise, which he rescued by shuttering hundreds of restaurants.

He burst onto the political stage when he argued with President Clinton over the Democrat's health care plan at a 1994 town hall meeting.

"On behalf of all of those business owners that are in a situation similar to mine," asked Cain, "my question is, quite simply, if I'm forced to do this, what will I tell those people whose jobs I will have to eliminate?"

The late Jack Kemp, the GOP vice presidential nominee in 1996, once described Cain as having "the voice of Othello, the looks of a football player, the English of Oxfordian quality and the courage of a lion."

In 2006, Cain was diagnosed with liver and colon cancer. He says he's been cancer-free since 2007 and credits the nation's health care system with keeping him alive. He says it's one reason he's so opposed to the health overhaul championed by Obama.

At the speech, Cain tried to build a foundation for his run for the White House. He said the American dream is under attack from runaway debt, a stagnant economy, a muddled foreign policy and an influx of illegal immigrants. He said Americans should be infuriated because the Obama administration's $787 billion stimulus program "didn't stimulate diddly."

"It's time to get real, folks. Hope and change ain't working," he said. "Hope and change is not a solution. Hope and change is not a job."

I pray for Allen West, he is a conservative and he also has extensive knowledge of the Middle East and the Muslims. He is my choice and its too costly to get in now. All the lefty loonies do is jump on the conservative candidates and try to dig up dirt and crush them. Wait, and jump in the last day possible. I believe if It isn't Chris Christi then it MUST be Allen West  I trust this man.

Thank you for the second video, gmiller,I have no doubt there are many more out there as well.

I was not commenting FOR or AGAINST any one prospective candidate but about the methods "our side" uses in the selection process.

I think it is possible to actually have conversations about these people without at least looking to harpoon their charecter in the process.

I do NOT disagree with auditing the Federal Reserve.....frankly I think it is long over due.

I don't doubt that there will be several "WOLVES in SHEEPS' CLOTHING" vying for the Republican nomination........perhaps the better term is R.I.N.O. and it is up to the voters to ascertain if the candidates are truly CONSERVATIVE or simply plastic men or women giving canned speeches full of what their 'handlers' tell them are just the right words and promises to get them elected........

Then they head off to DC and instead of doing the job they were hired to do they slot in as another cog in the movement of that city & the government.

People post things on You Tube all the time. Some are flattering [edited to be even more so] and others are not [also edited to suit the message the 'poster' wishes to convey], that was the reason for my question.

Your approach is interesting. What parts of the  video do you dispute?   What are your sources?  Did he or did he not support all those bailouts?  Did he or did he not discourage auditing the Fed?

 

I suggest that you practice what you preach, re: "using the tactics of the left."  I'm sticking to issues right now. You are NOT.

 

We should have learned by now that "exciting speakers" don't necessarily make good Presidents, or even good candidates (Trump). At least Cain doesn't rely on a teleprompter, though.

I love your enthusiasm!

I also have heard Herman Cain speak several times and have been impressed by HIS enthusiasm

and positive outlook on this country.

It is early in this cycle and there will be other candidates to be sure!

I pray the Lord will help us choose.

It is VERY early in the nominating process for the 2012 presidential election. A few Republicans have declared their intent tro run for the nomination of the party. Herman Cain is ONE of these people.

He is relatively unknown........fine, let's do our homework and become familiar with who he REALLY IS !

One of the things the left does and does EXTREMELY WELL is to present a united front and appear to all be of ONE MIND when it comes to the BIG DECISIONS.

WE on the other hand, tend to rip each others' heads off and spit down the necks of those who don't see things the way we do! THIS HAS GOT TO STOP!!!!!!!!!

One of the reasons perfectly GOOD people will not run for any major political office is because the opposition [or if you happen to be running as a Republican, your own party] will dig up anything that can possible destroy the candidate, his/her family, his/her business/his/her life.....just so THEIR SIDE will have a better chance!

Just how in the HELL are we supposed to find a candidate with a perfect background-----with NO SKELETONS or "IFFY" activities in HIS/HER past? I've only heard of one such Person and He was scourged, crowned with thorns and nailed to a cross!!!

There ARE no perfect people but somewhere in this country, there HAS to a person willing to stand up, warts and all and offer to do his or her best for the United States of America. To HONESTLY uphold the Constitution, AS IT IS WRITTEN!!!!! It is a brilliant document! It is written in language meant to be understood by scholars and farmers alike.

The Founders were able to look into the future, based on their great knowledge of history, and write into that document articles to PREVENT our central government from growing into the oppressive monster it is transforming into before our eyes. There ARE checks and balances available to the states which are being accessed by several states as I write this.

There are those who are working diligently and feverishly to destroy our Republican style of Democracy and we spit at each other like alley cats over a smelly fish carcass!

It is perfectly acceptable to DISCUSS the pros and cons of candidates as they present themselves to the political arena.............it is NEVER appropriate to use the tactics of the left when discussing potential Conservative/Republican Candidates. Sinking to their level is so far beneath anyone here! Use FACTS, VERIFIABLE FACTS.

This is important..............this is for keeps...........this is for our way of life.  I pray that all of you will take this seriously.

It's great to see that a successful, black, American in the tradition of MLK chose to seek the nomination in the quasi-conservative GOP rather than the communist democrat party. He clearly is a Tea Party favorite, an asset of America, and a credit to his race, and his country.  A self-made man who "got it" when patriotic Americans rejected the democrats' racist KKK supported agenda during the civil rights movement of the 60's, and rose above their "plantation", to excel in life.

Dare they accuse him of being racist when he criticizes Obama? 

He is a great example of what true liberation, and Liberty, can do to exhalt all of humanity.

Will I vote for him if he wins the nomination? ABSOLUTELY. Will he be nominated? MAYBE. May the best man (or woman) win! I will vote for the candidate who most represents CONSERVATIVE, American values, black or white, man or woman.

I know one thing: if America does not wake up and defend her founding principles with a true CONSERVATIVE candidate...WE'RE DOOMED!!!!

I will reserve my opinion on this for later, I do know he has baggage in his past supporting ideas that are not very good for a forward moving USA...
