Harry Reid concurs with Ted Cruz: Dianne Feinstein is a blithering idiot.

I am, of course, inferring that from context.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has decided that a proposed assault weapons ban won’t be part of a gun control bill the Senate plans to debate next month, the sponsor of the ban said Tuesday, a decision that means the ban stands little chance of survival.

Instead, Sen. Dianne Feinstein said she will be able to offer her ban on the military-style firearms as an amendment. Feinstein is all but certain to need 60 votes from the 100-member Senate to prevail, but she faces solid Republican opposition and likely defections from some moderate Democrats.

“I very much regret it,” Feinstein, D-Calif., told reporters of Reid’s decision. “I tried my best.”

Yes, I’m sure that Feinstein did, for what it’s worth. And I suppose that she meant well, or she at least meant something*. But the fact of the matter is that it was demonstrated last week by Senator Ted Cruz – you know, the Harvard/Princeton-trained lawyer who’s argued and won cases before the US Supreme Court – that Dianne Feinstein doesn’t really understand either guns or the Second Amendment, and that has an effect on one’s effectiveness. Whether or not that also happens to have an adverse effect on one’s ‘legacy:’ I mean, I’m kind of sorry that her signature legislation – the 1994 ‘assault weapons ban’ – turned out to be both useless AND unnecessary. But sometimes that’s how things go down.

Anyway, I hope Dianne Feinstein enjoys her next (and h0pefully last) term doing nothing really worthwhile in the Senate. Because, really, she crested some time ago.

*Robert Anton Wilson, I believe. I presume that Feinstein will recognize the name; Wilson was, I understand, quite fond of San Francisco.

Growing Number of States Eye Bills to Defy Federal Gun Laws

Shortly after voters in Colorado and Washington State approved measures that legalized the recreational use of marijuana, President Obama told Barbara Walters that his Justice Department would not prosecute pot users in these states.

“We’ve got bigger fish to fry,” Obama said.

Although the state measures defy federal law, it appears Barack Obama is giving each state a pass on this issue.

But, will Obama also respect states that pass legislation in defiance of federal law when it comes to firearms?

On March 12 and 14, the Senate Judiciary Committee passed both Sen. Charles Schumer’s (D-NY) “Fix Gun Checks Act,” which would criminalize all private firearm sales and Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s (D-CA) “Assault Weapons Ban.”

These bills have a long way to go before they become law – if they ever do – but states across the nation are introducing their own legislation to preemptively defeat any new federal gun laws.

Colorado: Sheriff Says New State Gun Laws Won’t be Enforced

COWeld County Sheriff John Cooke won’t enforce new state gun measures expected to be signed into law by Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper, arguing the proposed firearms restrictions give a “false sense of security.”

Lawmakers in Colorado on Friday approved a landmark expansion of background checks on firearm purchases. Earlier in the week, Colorado lawmakers approved a 15-round limit on ammunition magazines.

Both measures are awaiting the expected approval of the governor.

Cooke told GreeleyTribune.com that Democrats in the state legislature are uninformed and scrambling in response to the Aurora movie theater shooting and other recent tragedies.

“They’re feel-good, knee-jerk reactions that are unenforceable,” he told the news outlet.

The bill passed Friday expands cases when a $10 criminal background check would be required to legally transfer a gun. Republicans have opposed the bill, calling it an undue burden on…
