Webster defines a technicality as “a detail meaningful only to a specialist,” but sometimes those tiny quirks of our existence have great significance in our lives. Consider our time on Planet Earth- and how we refer to the passing of our days as past, present and future. In a technical sense, we cannot verbalize the present, because in the time it takes to even think of the now- that particular millisecond has already become the past. Therefore, we humans usually adopt a more practical approach to time- where the present is today- the past yesterday- and the future begins tomorrow.

However, there is yet another practical way in which we define the divisions of time in terms of the incessant challenges we face. Our problematic circumstances become the past only as we solve them- and the future refers to the time when present problems will be solved. Said another way, our weaknesses become the past only as fast as we overcome them- and by the grace of Almighty God, those imperfections then become our strengths.

So it is with the horrific problems which presently face our beloved nation- and for most Americans the past is generally defined as our experience prior to 11 September 2001- and the future as Election Day this coming November. The last such huge aggregation of passing time was WWII- which began for America on 7 December 1941 and ended shortly after the Enola Gay dropped her cargo on Japan.

The election of Barack Hussein Obama, therefore, was not the beginning of our present nightmare- but only a bookmark where that bad dream became much worse. By the same token, it is important to recognize that the November elections, despite the brief period of euphoria which Taxed Enough Already patriots now anticipate, will only represent a turning point in this war against tyranny- much like the Normandy Invasion during WWII.

We must prepare ourselves for the long run ahead- an excruciating marathon by any reasonable definition. We must maintain our resolve to bequeath the blessings of liberty to future generations. We must constantly renew our commitment to stay the course until the Constitution of United States once again rules firmly as our guiding light- second only to Almighty God.

One by one, we shall defeat the demons which oppose our liberty, whether they be tyrannical communists, greedy financial opportunists or frenetic fanatics of any other variety- Muslim extremists, Mexican drug lords, misguided environmentalists and the like.

More importantly, we must all sharpen our focus on our individual families. The family, after all, is the basic unit of American society- any liberal hype to the contrary. We cannot effectively prepare for America’s future without strengthening our individual families. As we face the daunting challenges of today, it is the strength of our individual American families and our stalwart faith in God which give us cause to hope for a brighter tomorrow.

Foolish is the man or woman whose hopes of lasting happiness are pinned on the fleeting rewards of self-gratification. Only the heartfelt investments we make in our eternal families open the door to lasting joy. At some point beyond the November elections, the Me generation must be supplanted by the We.

Major Christian Jenni and SSG Jeremy Hancock returned from Afghanistan late Saturday night. Their arrival was originally anticipated to be about 1000 hours that morning at McGuire AFB, but their departure was continually pushed back- and as my wife and I waited anxiously at McGuire, their landing was ultimately diverted to Philadelphia. Hearts heavy that our trip to Maguire had been in vain and being clueless as to the remainder of their revised itinerary, we headed home. About halfway back to Ocean City, however, we received a phone call from Christian advising they would be transported by bus to Fort Dix- where they would remain for a few days until going home to Utah. Sharon and I turned around and headed back toward Dix. Saturday night became Sunday morning. 0030. 0100. 0130. We weren’t even certain that we were waiting in the right place- the military clothing store on Texas Avenue. Shortly before 0200 hours, two military busses passed by. We quickly followed them to a debriefing location- and a short but joyful reunion took place. There was no brass band to greet these returning heroes. No music, no fanfare, no parade. Only two incredibly tired military parents- present only by the grace of God.

Sharon snapped a photo of me standing between Christian and Jeremy, but for some reason the camera failed to record it- even though the flash went off. No matter. For the rest of my time on earth and throughout all eternity, I will remember wrapping my loving arms around those two American Soldiers…

My fellow Americans, a prosperous and joyful future is ours for the making- for all our individual families and for our nation as a whole- on free soil blessed by Almighty God and hallowed by precious patriot blood spilt in liberty’s defense. No enemy can take that birthright from us- unless we willfully allow them to do so- through our own neglect and callous indifference. Fight on, my friends!
