Reports this morning indicate U.S. Commanding General in Afghanistan – Gen. Stanley McChrystal – has been summoned to Washington to answer to President Obama for his interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, in which he is quoted as being dismissive and derisive toward Obama, Vice-President Biden, National Security Adviser James Jones, and Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry:
McChrystal was probably showing his true feelings, which does not speak well at all for President Obama and those around him. They have obviously done a very poor job of cultivating a a relationship of trust with our top U.S. Commander. And remember – McChrystal is Obama’s guy. The article reveals McChrystal voted for Obama and told him so when they met for the first time. Obama handpicked him for the job. So, Obama can’t portray McChrystal as the entrenched old military guy who resented Obama becoming Commander-in-Chief. On the contrary, this is the commander Obama chose for the job, and yet he has obviously failed to establish a working rapport with his own commander.
But McChrystal should never have given an interview like this to Rolling Stone. He needs to be completely focused on the war effort in Afghanistan, and this mess is a distraction that effort does not need.
