“Rails”

 

A train whistle blows
who knows where it goes...?

Crickets humming, wailing...
A firefly trailing,
streaking a green light
into a wet night...

In the distance,
over chimneys and rooftops,
a baby cries, a soldier dies...

Rain quietly falling, cascading,
Memories, dancing down forgotten lanes, parading...

Coffee spillin’ from a rusty pot
a cigarette, a puff of smoke, a pair of shoes
is all I got...

 

A cigarette glowing, showing through the dark
A puff of smoke curling ‘round a gaslight
in a deep, quiet park

A pair of shoes walking, treading,
on a wet, rainy pavement...
Each step dreading
the next

A cigarette burning,
dying in smouldering pain
Eyes turning, learning
that tears aren’t really rain...

A puff of smoke
whispering like a sightless ghost
silently sneaking, creeping;
there, yet impossible to feel,
then lost to the blackness...

A pair of shoes walking
into neverness, random,
through the flashings of night
in shallow puddles
reflecting a cold lamp’s light

Feet falling, pounding;
Echoes of gone times,
...going away
Echoes softly sounding

I so enjoy these wonderful trips down "memory lane"....Peter, Paul & Mary were my favorites.....their harmony was so special and all of their songs were stories.
