House approves resolution opposing Obama's debt-limit hike

The House on Wednesday evening approved a resolution disapproving of President Obama's request to increase the debt ceiling by another $1.2 trillion, sending it to a Senate that is expected to reject it.

The House approved the resolution in a 239-176 vote in which just one Republican voted against it, and six Democrats voted for it. But the vote fell far short of the two-thirds majority that would be needed for passage if Obama were to veto the resolution.

House Rules Committee Chairman David Dreier (R-Calif.) was the only Republican to vote against the resolution. Two Republicans voted "present": Reps. Jeff Landry (La.) and Joe Walsh (Ill.).

Democrats voting yes were Reps. Jason Altmire (Pa.), John Barrow (Ga.), Dan Boren (Okla.), Larry Kissell (NC), Jim Matheson (Utah), and Mike McIntyre (NC).

Democrats spend the day arguing that the resolution was a waste of time. Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) called it a "political stunt," and House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said the vote was designed to give Republicans the appearance that they oppose the debt-ceiling increase, even though the increase was all but assured in legislation that Congress approved last year.

"This is a game that will say, see, I voted against debt," Hoyer said.

Under last year's Budget Control Act (BCA), Obama has the authority to call for an increase in the debt ceiling by $1.2 trillion. This increase can only be avoided if both the House and Senate pass resolutions of disapproval, although the Senate is not expected to follow suit.

Do the supposed Republicans REALLY think we're being fooled by the obsequiousness of their antics in Washington???

They all vote the letter behind the name. Then you have groups like grassfire who are directly connected to the repubs who don’t want to look at even the slightest deviation from the status qua. Ohio is lost folks, these idiots are to willing to trade security and socialism for any semblance of freedom and liberty and if it weren’t for job ties in this crappy Obumbler economy I would be in Texas or Alaska.

Our country is being taken on purpose right from under us. Now, the Canda pipeline? We will have less fuel, less coal, less and less and less so we can become a third world country. We should force our sheriffs to allow the pipeline to go through, screw our dear leader and Kilery Klinger of the state dept. They have and agenda and it is not for the welfare of we the people.

Comment by gmiller on January 18, 2012 at 8:43pm: Boehner/House of Reps rubberstamped a $7 TRILLION increase in spending over 10 years, fully funded Obamacare and all of the bureaucracy. Where are all these "Conservatives" we voted for? They also voted for the Constitution-killing "Patriot" Act, NDAA, food bill and more.

Boehner has no credible primary opponent. OH Republicans have written me that he is "unbeatable."

Better than Pelosi? I suppose, but that's not a very high standard.

People get the government that they deserve.
