We’re Not Mainstream America. Not yet, anyway…

Thursday, 26th May, I made the announcement that I’m currently supporting Mitt Romney as the 2012 GOP Presidential nominee. Wow! The swift reaction from Tea Party Nation, where the blog was featured, was blistering- bordering on crucifixion. Some went ballistic over my praise of Paul- calling him a lunatic and a radical. I was even criticized for mentioning Redford.

Among those 16 pages of mostly negative comments? One fellow said he’d vote for Obama before he’d vote for Romney. Another, “If Romney is the GOP choice, then the GOP must be destroyed.” Others preferred to vote third party, rather than support Romney. The most common epithet for Mitt was “RINO.“ And Philip Roth wrote, “Finally, I believe that Mr. Jenni being LDS has far more to do with his decision than he wants to admit.”

Generally, it wasn’t pretty, but I did have a few defenders. My favorite was Joan Phillips, who wrote, “Excellent post, as usual. I remember that scene in The Natural - gave me the chills. Yes, we must choose our candidate very carefully, and tho' I don't care for Romney, he may have the best chance when it comes to defeating ‘King Teleprompter.’  Still, I find it difficult to dwell on a 2012 election when I have said and posted many times- ‘How can Obama be eligible for RE-ELECTION when he was never eligible to be elected POTUS in the first place?’ That question is foremost in my mind, and I'm still waiting for someone to light that fuse and watch the sparks fly when those fireworks go off. That (anointed) one would be blown out of office, and we could celebrate Independence Day as never before.”

Here’s the primary problem with our TEA Party. Too many of us erroneously believe that we represent mainstream America. I wish that were the case. We don’t. Not yet, anyway.

And true, Romney may be a little too “establishment.” Nevertheless, I’m gonna back Mitt for 2012, not because I think he’s the ideal Presidential candidate- but because he has the money-raising capability and enough mainstream influence to beat Obama. Four more years of the clown from Kenya, and we’re toast.

Having said all that, if Sarah Palin overtakes Romney, which is a distinct possibility, I’ll jump Mitt’s ship like a rat from a burning freighter. However, I also believe a Romney-Palin ticket (or vice versa) would steal the show. I don’t give a damn if Sarah CAN see Russia from her house. It’s all about money this time around, folks. Barry has over a billion bucks to promote his sinister lies. Only Mitt and/or Sarah enjoy sufficient national popularity to save us from a remake of that pathetic GOP food fight we endured in 2008.

And you think Romney is a rhinoceros? Did you know Herman Cain once worked for the Federal Reserve? Do you really trust Newt Gingrich? Wanna resurrect FNC’s mealy-mouthed Huckabee? Or that conniving weasel Trump?

West, Bachmann, Pawlenty and the rest? Even Beck? Not his time around- my gross arrogance (as perceived by some folks) notwithstanding.

Well, with the blink of an eye, May 2011 is already past, but please let me close with a few words about Memorial Day.

My greatest Memorial Day event was back in ‘68 when as a young Army bugler I stood near the Pennsylvania Monument at Verdun and sounded Taps at the command of a French general. The catchphrase “Greatest Generation” hadn’t yet been coined by Tom Brokaw- who was just 28 at the time, not much older than myself. Nevertheless, the supernal glory of those American patriots seemed to permeate the cemetery’s sacred air that day- as though their valiant ghosts stood at rigid attention as I blew each mournful note. One member of the color guard would later remark that the eerie experience compelled even the hair on his backside stand at attention.

In contrast, my lovely granddaughter Madissen and I planted our red, white and blue umbrella on the Ocean City beach early this morning to lay temporary claim to a few square feet of sandy real estate. Returning home, we crossed the boardwalk just in time for Whitney Houston’s legendary recording of our national anthem as our hallowed Title of Liberty was raised over Gillian’s water park. I felt my body stiffen as this old Soldier snapped to attention and saluted Old Glory until Whitney’s last note faded. Yet in my periphery vision, I saw many runners and bikers disrespectfully hurry by- as though nothing special was happening. I thought to myself, “If they won’t acknowledge our flag on Memorial Day Weekend, when will they?” No, my Taxed-Enough-Already friends, we are not mainstream America. Not yet…

My suggestion is that each of us in our own states need to get groups together to start hammering away at the people in charge of the election process. Get a petition signed and turn it over to your representatives and tell them you will not tolerate a blatant usurper to run a second time.  Some way, regardless of whether we decide to back Romney, West, Paul, or Mickey Mouse - we MUST make our state legislators understand that "we the people" are fed up and WILL NOT accept anymore of the hanky-panky going on in our elections or in D.C.
