Romney damages his election prospects

Mitt Romney may have damaged his election prospects by needlessly antagonizing Ron Paul and conservative delegates on matters of credentials, rules, and the roll call of states at the Republican National Convention in Tampa.

The Romney-controlled Credentials Committee stripped away 10 of Paul’s delegates in Maine and replaced them with Romney delegates.

The Romney-controlled Rules Committee also adopted new rules affecting future national conventions and the entire structure of the GOP.

Morton Blackwell, the longtime Republican National Committeeman from Virginia and a Romney delegate, wrote that these rule changes “could fundamentally change our Republican Party--and not for the better.”

The Convention even refused to acknowledge the votes for Ron Paul during the roll call of the states.

Rep. Paul believes his supporters have been treated “atrociously” and has refused to endorse Romney.

It is incredible that Romney would alienate Paul and his supporters, along with many other conservatives, over what are, in the big picture, inconsequential matters.

Romney should have been magnanimous to his vanquished opponents.

For that matter, Sarah Palin should have been a featured speaker, but she wasn’t even invited to the Convention.

How could Romney make such fundamental mistakes?

If he believes that all conservatives will eventually fall in line to support him because they have no alternatives, he is mistaken, as one alternative is to not vote at all.

Constitution Party candidate Virgil Goode, a former Congressman from Virginia, and Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson, a former governor of New Mexico, could also provide alternatives to Romney and Obama.

In any case, Romney has probably lost some of the enthusiasm and dedicated efforts that he could have had from legions of volunteers.
