A Colorado state Senator is resigning instead of facing a recall election over her support for harsher gun control — and the move will preserve the Democratic majority in the legislative body.
Sen. Evie Hudak (D-Westminster) announced her resignation on Wednesday in a public letter, according to the Denver Post. Opponents of her stance on gun control were collecting the 18,900 signatures needed to force a recall. And considering Hudak won her 2012 re-election campaign by fewer than 600 votes, the recall would have likely been successful.
And if that happened, Democrats would have also lost their 18-17 majority in the Senate. Instead, a Democratic vacancy committee will appoint someone to fill her vacancy until 2014.
“By resigning I am protecting these important new laws for the good of Colorado and ensuring that we can continue looking forward,” Hudak wrote regarding the gun control measures.

Hudak and other legislators voted to pass SB 13-197, a bill that takes guns away from people convicted of domestic abuse. In her resignation letter, Hudak cited support from constituents as part of her reasoning behind her choice to support the legislation.
But after state Sens. John Morse (D-Colorado Springs) and Angela Giron (D-Pueblo) l..., Democrats apparently weren’t taking any chances with Hudak.
The retiring state Senator did not make an appearance at her scheduled press conference on Wednesday morning, the Post reported. Supporters and opponents of the controversial legislator gathered in spite of her absence, however.
“This is a cowardly way out of the recall,” said Joe Neville, political Director for Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, told the Post. “We’re still charging toward Tuesday and no matter what we’ll submit the petition signatures.”
