Did Obama purposely open our border with Mexico to allow children infected with Enterovirus D68 to enter?

NEW YORK (PIX11) – Over a dozen New York children have been diagnosed with enterovirus D68 (EV-68), a severe respiratory illness that led to the hospitalization of hundreds of children in the Midwest.

New York State Department of Health officials warn that the illness can be especially serious for children with asthma.

EV-D68 cases have been confirmed in the Capital Region and Central New York.

“It is important that we follow common sense rules to prevent the spread of this virus, as we do for flu and other contagious illnesses” said Acting State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker. “Because there is no specific treatment or vaccination against this virus, our best defense is to prevent it by practicing proper hygiene.”

Symptoms of the illness include fever, runny nose, sneezing, coughing and body aches.

Enteroviruses are spread by having close contact with an infected person, or by touching objects or surfaces contaminated with the virus then touching your mouth, nose or eyes.

This particular strain of enterovirus is uncommon, so the full range of symptoms is not yet known.

In Kansas City alone, 450 children with treated for EV-D68, and officials suspect cases in Colorado, Illinois and Ohio may be part of a regional outbreak.

To protect yourself and from the virus, health officials advise:

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
• Avoid kissing, hugging, and sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick.
• Disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick.
• Use the same precautions you would use to prevent the spread of influenza.

EV-D68 was first identified in California in 1968, according to the Health Department. The illness has been rare in the United States.

Enterovirus D68: Hundreds of children across ten US states treated for respiratory illness linked to common cold

No deaths have been reported, but one hospital in Kansas City, Missouri had put dozens of patients in intensive care

Several hundred children in at least 10 US states have been treated for respiratory illnesses believed to have been caused by a rare and potentially fatal virus related to the common cold. The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta is reportedly testing samples for Enterovirus D68 from patients in ten states including Missouri, Colorado, Illinois, North Carolina, Georgia, Ohio, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma and Kentucky.

`Many children have been hospitalised after the virus exacerbated existing lung conditions such as asthma. Some are as young as 3 years old. No deaths have been reported, but one hospital in Kansas City, Missouri has treated more than 300 cases, 15 per cent of which led to children being put in intensive care, according to the state’s Department of Health. In a report, the agency did add that “many infections will be mild and self-limited, requiring only symptomatic treatment.

EV-D68, as the rare virus is known, is related to the rhinovirus, which causes the common cold. Its early symptoms are similar – for example, a running nose, fever and coughing. However, the Enterovirus can escalate rapidly, leading to severe breathing difficulties. There is currently no vaccine or antiviral treatment for it.

So far only Missouri has confirmed that its cases were caused by EV-D68, but, according to The Denver Post, Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora has reportedly seen some 900 children with matching symptoms, 86 of whom were admitted to the hospital for ongoing treatment. At Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois, more than 70 children were treated for severe respiratory symptoms during the recent Labour Day weekend.

There are more than 100 varieties of Enterovirus, which between them cause as many as 15 million infections in the US each year, according to the CDC. Children are among the most vulnerable to infection, especially as they return to crowded school playgrounds following the summer holidays.

In a 2011 report, the CDC found 90 recent cases of EV-D68 clustered in three US states, as well as the Philippines, Japan and the Netherlands. Of the 90 patients identified, three had died, though none of them were in the US. Mark Pallansch, the director of the CDC’s Division of Viral Diseases, told CNN that the cases already seen by hospitals across the Midwest and South could be “just the tip of the iceberg in terms of severe cases.” He added, “We’re in the middle of looking into this... We don’t have all the answers yet.”

Is enterovirus deadly

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Kids in Virginia are coming down with what doctors suspect is the potentially deadly enterovirus strain that has hospitalized children in the midwest—so the obvious question is, will it move into Maryland?

Pat Warren has more on what parents should look for.

The short answer is yes, there’s a likelihood that the virus will show up in Maryland and children are especially vulnerable.

A killer cold hits in Chicago and Denver.

“A lot of kids were sneezing. I got sneezed on twice. It’s pretty nasty,” said one.

“I know I was scared; I remember thinking I was going to die,” said another.

Enterovirus D68 is spreading through the Midwest, now Virginia and possibly Maryland—making schools its playground and shocking parents with how fast sneezing can morph into wheezing.

“A child can’t catch his or her breath or can’t speak clearly. Severe respiratory distress; that would be the sign to call 911 and/or get your child into the emergency department,” said Dr. Ashanti Woods.

It should put parents on the alert.

“It’s very possible that a child has already had an enterovirus infection and we don’t even know it because it caused the common cold symptoms. If, however, this cold seems to linger, bad cold, child doesn’t get better, that will be a sign for a parent to take their child to be evaluated by a medical professional,” Woods said.

Lots of handwashing, drinking liquids and keeping sick children home from school are the best precautions against the spread of the disease.

Virginia hospitals are waiting for the CDC to determine if the children hospitalized there have the virus. There are no reports of the disease surfacing in Maryland.

Children with asthma or other breathing disorders are particularly vulnerable.
