School’s safety plan: Children throw canned goods at armed intruders

If the TERRORISTS didn't do it, then they must be laughing their camels off while they wipe down their beheading knives! There's no WAY we can look more stupid than we do.

VALLEY, Ala. – An Alabama school principal is urging children to bring canned goods to school and use them to “stun” an intruder.

In the letter to parents, W.F. Burns Middle School Principal Priscilla Holley says, “As a result of school shootings throughout the United States and discussing with law enforcement on the best procedure to follow to keep our students safe, we are enhancing our procedure for intruders,” WHNT reports.

“We are asking each student to bring an 8 oz. canned food item (corn, beans, peas, etc.) to use in case an intruder enters their class,” the letter reads.

Holley’s directive continues:

The procedure will be the same as we have done in the past with the addition of arming our students with a canned food item. We realize at first this may seem odd; however, it is a practice that would catch an intruder off guard. The canned food item would stun the intruder or even knock him out until the police arrive.

The tactic comes from a survival theory called ALICE: Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate.

“I can honestly say that the major point of the the training… is to be able to get kids evacuated and not be sitting ducks hiding under desks,” Superintendent of Chambers County Schools Dr. Kelli Hodge tells the news station.

While the intruder may be armed with a semi-automatic weapon, a can of creamed corn will “give the students a sense of empowerment to protect themselves and will make them feel secure in case an intruder enters the classroom,” according to Holley’s letter.

She adds that having the canned goods on hand will allow classes to “be prepared” should an attack take place.

According to Channel 19, the ALICE tactics fall within school safety guidelines authored by the federal Department of Education.

“Understandably, this is a sensitive topic. There is no single answer for what to do, but a survival mindset can increase the odds of surviving,” the Department of Education writes.

“There are three basic options: run, hide, or fight. You can run away from the shooter, seek a secure place where you can hide and/or deny the shooter access, or incapacitate the shooter to survive and protect others from harm.”

Any cans that haven’t pelted an intruder will be donated to a food pantry.
