There are multiple reasons why Ronald Reagan is called, “The Great Communicator.” This video is one of the great examples.

In 1976, Reagan lost a hard-fought battle to win the GOP Nomination to then-President Gerald Ford. After Ford had given his acceptance speech, he then looked to where Reagan was sitting in the meeting hall and waved for him to come down to the platform. The crowd went wild, cheering and chanting, “Reagan,” and “Speech!” After it was clear the crowd would not stop, Reagan and his wife Nancy made their way to the stage where Reagan then proceeded to give a brief but powerful speech – completely impromptu – with no notes and no teleprompter.

It is said that after Reagan’s remarks, there was a strong sense in the hall among the delegates that, “We just nominated the wrong man.”
