Adam Weishaupt did not found the Illuminati.
It was conceived in about 1768 by Mayer Rothschild and Prince William of Hess. The latter used to rent out his powerful army to other countries as a mercenary force to fight the wars created by Mayer. Together they made much money.
In 1776, the same year of our supposed independence, they finalized their new religion. Then they turned the reins over to Adam Weishaupt, a very disgruntled well known Jesuit. He vowed to destroy the church and the result is what you see today.
