1) I'm lucky to be here,

2) deciding to enter someone's home to prevent a crime, personal attack, or family trouble, or handle a mental patient, is one of the most difficult decisions an officer must make. Minutes or even seconds can make the difference between injury or even life and death. There is often NO TIME for a warrant, no time to wait for a backup.

The success at scenes like the above depend on an officer's training, state of mind, and personal experiences.

I've seen it go both ways, wait to enter and see someone get hurt, enter in a hurry and cause more harm than good.

Comment by Richard Allan Jenni on June 1, 2011 at 6:19am: I myself no longer feel safe from intrusion in my own home. All it takes is a 911 call from a kook- and the police have a supposed "right" to come marching right into your home. The day someone called 911 upon hearing my mother screaming, three policeman soon appeared at my door. Through the open door, they could easily detect that things were now quiet. They were nice enough, but despite my protests, they would not go away until my home had been inspected. They finally agreed to have only the senior officer come in and look around. He then saw my poor demented mother sitting in her rocker- munching on a fig newton, I believe. Anyway, there were three of them and one of me- and whatever they're ultimate intention, I felt gravely intimidated. Silly I suppose, but I think I'd sleep better at night with a shotgun handy- no police force- and the restoration of my right to simply defend myself against intruders.

Comment by PHILIP SCHNEIDER on June 1, 2011 at 12:53am: If you read the details of the case you MIGHT understand the police wanting to enter a house following a possible crime in progress.

However, the high court in this case should have singled out this case without creating the new broader language which gives police the authority to enter without court order.

THAT'S WRONG!
