Sandra Fluke uproar reveals double-standard for liberals, conservatives

By Kathy Holthausen

March 7, 2012

I'm offended. And it's not because Rush Limbaugh called Sandra Fluke a slut.

Back on Jan. 7, during a Republican debate, George Stephanopoulis hounded Mitt Romney with a crazy question about whether or not states had the right to ban birth control. He was relentless, and we all wondered what he was up to.

We got our answer a few weeks ago when the most recent abomination of Obamacare was revealed. We learned that the federal government was demanding religious organizations provide contraception, including the "morning after pill" and sterilization procedures for their employees, even though these things are counter to their traditions and teachings. Church leaders immediately responded that this wasn't going to happen, pointing to the First Amendment. And the battle between religion and big government was on. The media seemed prepared.

Having not been successful at getting the desired sound bite from Romney, and since by then Rick Santorum was moving up in the polls, it was Santorum who took the first shots. Within a week, most of America was led to believe Santorum's platform aimed to ban the sale of contraceptions and shoes to women as well as move their beds into the kitchen for expediency.

In the meantime, U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa called for a hearing to investigate whether or not the Obama mandate infringed on religious freedom. The panel was made up mostly of religious leaders, the obvious choice.

However, Democratic members of Congress wanted to include a witness, college student Sandra Fluke, to talk about contraception. Issa refused, saying what she had to offer was not pertinent to the discussion. Two Democratic congresswomen walked out of the hearing and straight to the microphones, demanding to know, "Where are the women?"

From that moment, the hearing, which according to the Congressional Record was called "Lines Crossed: Separation of Church and State," became known in the press and by every Democrat as "the hearing where the men are trying to take birth control away from women" or some variation of the same.

Nancy Pelosi then held a hearing at which Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke was the lone witness. Fluke was presented to us initially as a 23-year-old college coed, struggling to make ends meet. But it turns out that Ms. Fluke is 30-years-old and an experienced activist.

She's championed many liberal causes, including something called "reproductive justice." She says she chose Georgetown purposely because contraception was not included in their insurance policy and she wanted to change that. To many of us, her "testimony" was laughable. Rush Limbaugh found it so absurd that he's gotten into some hot water over his remarks.

So why am I offended? I'm not concerned about Limbaugh. He'll land on his feet as he always does. He lost a few advertisers, but I'm sure there are plenty of companies who will be looking to fill those slots.

I'm not concerned about Ms. Fluke. OK, maybe I'm a little offended that even though she has the privilege of attending Georgetown's law school on someone else's dime, she's still looking for more handouts. But she'll be graduating soon and by this time next year she'll be part of the dreaded 1 percent. I'm certain she'll be able to afford her birth control then.

No, I'm offended that our media has fully participated in the careful creation of the story right from the beginning (see Stephanopoulos.) At a time when everyone is concerned about our economic future, our press is in full partnership in fabricating a story out of whole cloth to provide a smokescreen for the the Democrats, and draw attention from President Obama's dismal economic record. At the same time, they vilify the Republicans, twisting support of the Constitution and religious freedom into misogyny and hate

.
When Limbaugh calls an activist a "slut," our media stands side by side with the Democratic Party, demanding that Republican leaders disavow him. When Maxine Waters calls John Boehner and Eric Cantor demons, our media is silent. When words like slut and far, far worse are used against Sarah Palin, Michelle Malkin or Laura Ingraham, our press is silent. They have clearly chosen sides and no longer even make an attempt to hide it.

And that offends me.

You have had lead-in stories in the past that were not posted, so, why do you bother having them? Sometimes I feel like dropping this site because of that.

A Texas school district has filed a complaint alleging that students from a rival school engaged in racism by chanting “USA, USA” at a basketball game. The students involved in the incident were reprimanded and forced to apologize.

The San Antonio Independent School District filed the complaint with the University Interscholastic League, the governing body for athletics in Texas. They allege that students at Alamo Heights High School began chanting “USA, USA” after they defeated Edison High School to win a region basketball championship.

Edison’s team is predominantly Hispanic, said Leslie Price, a spokesperson for the San Antonio ISD.

“The implication as they are not American citizens,” Price told Fox News. “We understand competiveness and rivalry, but you need to choose your words and think about the meaning behind them.”

Price said she believes the “USA, USA” chant was racially motivated.

“It was chanted selectively at a school that is predominantly Hispanic and there was understanding of that,” she said.

Price said the school district was bombarded with a number of people who found the “USA, USA” chant to be “very disrespectful.”

“That might be chanted at international soccer games,” she said. “But this is not a chant that these students chant at all of their basketball games. It was selective.”

According to local news accounts, the chanting occurred immediately after Alamo Heights won the championship. It lasted about five seconds before the head coach ordered the students to stop.

Alamo Heights ISD Superintendent Kevin Brown told MySanAntonio.com that he had apologized to San Antonio ISD officials.

“Unfortunately, after the game, we had a handful of students who made a bad decision and we’re very sorry it happened,” Brown told the newspaper. “They made a mistake and we’re going to use this as a learning experience.”

Price said it’s not the first time their students have been victims of insensitive chants. Last year students at another school chanted “USA, USA” and “Arizona.” It happened during the national discussion on Arizona’s controversial immigration bill.

The school district’s athletic director, Gil Garza, told the newspaper that the chant cannot be ignored.

“Our community is fed up,” he told MySanAntonio.com. “It’s really frustrating that kids work so hard to get to this level and there’s another group of kids degrading them.”

Jamey Harrison, deputy director of the University Interscholastic League, told Fox News that they have an “ongoing investigation” into the incident and at this point, it is unclear if the chant was racially motivated.

“Clearly, officials from San Antonio ISD felt it was,” Harrison said. “It’s my understanding they felt like it was motivated by the fact that most of the students on their team were of Hispanic origin.”

Harrison said they do not condone in any way “any type of derogatory chant or racially motivated chant at one of our events.”

Should the investigation uncover wrongdoing, he said the school could face a whole range of sanctions — from probation to potential suspensions.

Your lead-in story. What else? It tells about one place where you may not cheer for the U.S.A.

I'm no longer offended by this everyday tactic of the liberal progressive democrat machine invective. They've been doing this too long to make me even take a second look.

What offends me is conservatives who actually think we have to apologize or explain away name calling as if only the liberals are allowed to take that position.

Liberals are ALWAYS the first to call names. The practice was honed to a fine precision instrument by the Clinton administration and carries on today. What fools we are thinking there's something immoral in name calling . . . .  this is POLITICS for chrissake!
Now come on, "TEA BAGGERS" lets get on with it!!!
