Tea Party marchers in Harrisburg rally for fiscal responsibility, tax reform

Participants marched from City Island to the state Capitol steps chanting "Can you hear us now?" They carried signs reading, "Less Government Restore the Public" and "Strike Three Get Out." They waved American flags and yellow flags with the slogan, "Don't Tread on Me."

Organizers said that more than 2,000 people attended the March on Harrisburg, hosted by the Pennsylvania Tea Party Patriots. The rally was an offshoot of recent Tea Party events held in Washington, D.C. and around the country.

"Although you hear hooting and hollering, these are not radicals," said Richard Schin, a Republican Lower Allen Twp. Commissioner-elect and a member of the Mechanicsburg Area 9/12 Project. "The silent majority is waking up."

Organizers said the rally was intended to send a message to state lawmakers about fiscal responsibility and tax reform.

"The people working against us are so well organized. We have to do something," said Larry Hutton of Warrington Twp.

Protesters arrived from nearly every corner of the state representing several dozen groups, including the Philadelphia Tea Party Patriots; The Thomas Jefferson Club; Valley Forge Patriots; Delaware County Patriots; Pittsburgh Tea Parties; Southwestern PA Tea Party; and The Pennsylvania Freedom Fighters.

Several truckers sounded their horns in support as they drove up State Street and parked their rigs. The scheduled keynote speaker, Dick Armey, the former House GOP leader and current chairman of FreedomWorks, was unable to attend due to weather delays traveling from North Carolina.
