A Wall of Time Between Us

...seems like only yesterday
we chased the wind
and caught the stars
only blue skies above, no clouds of grey
...you, my love, were my best friend
riding on my handlebars

As time slipped through the hour glass
and days turned into years
we grew up together that way
...from first grade to the senior class
from lemonade to cheers and beers
“made for each other”, folks all would say

...those memories of days of old
keep whispering to me
as I wonder how and where
we lost it all, like gypsy gold,
like summer nights and a wishing tree,
...we lost our love so rare

...when urgently there came the call
I had to go, and take up arms
...and leave you back so many miles
so many summers, winters and falls
still dreaming of your tender charms
your loving gaze, our secret smiles

I’ve traveled on a lonesome road
from those old days to this
through cloudy days and rainbows
walking where the rivers flowed
remembering your yearning kiss
as time went by, then somehow froze

A wall too high to overcome
