Were the Founding Fathers “Tolerant” of Islam?

Posted on March 11, 2013

by Dave Miller, Ph.D.

[Editor’s Note: This article is the first installment of a two-part critique of an article written by James Hutson, Library of Congress Manuscript Division Chief, on the Founding Fathers’ attitude toward Islam.]

One prominent misconception pertaining to the liberty envisioned by the Founding Fathers of America concerns their intentions with regard to non-Christian religions. Case in point: Manuscript Division Chief of the Library of Congress, James Hutson, wrote an article, titled “The Founding Fathers and Islam” (which routinely receives sanction on Muslim Web sites and blogs [e.g., Amanullah, 2007; Shadia, 2012; “How Did the U.S…?” 2011; Pakistanis…, 2011; Nuha, 2012; The Islam Factor, 2008; Islamic News Updates, 2011]), in which he suggests that

it is clear that the Founding Fathers thought about the relationship of Islam to the new nation and were prepared to make a place for it in the republic…. The Founders of this nation explicitly included Islam in their vision of the future of the republic…[and] would have incorporated it into the fabric of American life (2002, emp. added).

Such expressions as “prepared to make a place for it,” “explicitly included,” and “would have incorporated it” are ambiguous and vague at the least, and misleading at worst. They leave the impression that the Founders were pluralistic and welcomed Islam as a viable, authentic religion that ought to receive society’s equal encouragement and acceptance along with Christianity, further implying that other non-Christian religions, and even the irreligious and atheist, should be given the same consideration. It is disconcerting that such a prominent person in a governmental organization as influential as the Library of Congress would propagate the myth of political correctness to the detriment of the nation and the disparagement of our nation’s Founders. The pervasive propaganda of political correctness has so colored the average American’s perspective that it is commonplace to superimpose current conceptions back onto the Founding era. Nevertheless, the documentary evidence clearly demonstrates that the Founders did not share this “politically correct,” sanitized version of history.

The Founders would not have favored integrating Islam into our schools, government, and other civil institutions. Far from it. In his discussion of freedom of religion in his monumental Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States, Father of American Jurisprudence Joseph Story clarified the meaning of the First Amendment with regard to the priority of Christianity:….

Liberty Counsel
Mathew Staver, Founder and Chairman

The Bill of Rights was conspicuously absent as part of the Constitution used during the swearing-in ceremony of John Brennan as our CIA Director.

A Freudian slip?  An intentional oversight?  Or the end of accountability in our federal intelligence services?  Please see my important update below – Mat.

Last Friday, in a private ceremony conducted by Vice President Joe Biden, John Brennan was sworn in as our Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

But Brennan’s ceremony was different – quite different – from those of his predecessors.

First, John Brennan chose not to place his left hand on a Bible, which, as I’m sure you know, is the traditional ceremonial format for taking a solemn oath.

Now-Secretary Brennan instead chose to place his left hand on an original draft of the Constitution from 1787.  Brennan made the request to the National Archives because, as the White House reported, “he wanted to reaffirm his commitment to the rule of law as he took the oath of office as Director of the CIA…”

The catch is, that draft of the Constitution did not contain the Bill of Rights.  In other words, John Brennan swore to uphold the Constitution on a draft copy that didn’t include some of the most important guarantees of our individual freedoms – the first ten amendments to the Constitution, known as the Bill of Rights, which were ratified in 1791.

No freedom of speech… no establishment of religion clause… no right to bear arms… no law against unreasonable searches and seizures…. no guarantees to a speedy and public trial were in the Constitution draft upon which John Brennan swore.

During his confirmation hearings, Brennan came under fire for his refusal to answer questions on our individual liberties stemming from the Bill of Rights.  Now, we hear of this unprecedented swearing-in ceremony.  What should the American people make of it?

Is this a hidden message – or an overt message?  Secretary Brennan hasn’t commented on the uproar following the disclosure of his truly unusual request concerning the components of his swearing-in ceremony.

++Liberty Counsel has declared 2013 is the year for a “New Birth of Liberty” in America!

Of course, it is our Constitution that defines our liberty and embodies the Founders’ greatest gift to the American people, a gift placed into effect upon its ratification in 1789.  It defines and establishes the separation of powers that provides a sure defense against despotic and tyrannical forces – unless the people allow it to be subverted.

The gift of liberty is far too precious to squander. It is our duty to fight for what is right and good and which was obtained and preserved at a great price.

Please take a moment to sign our Oath of Allegiance Letter declaring that you, too, will defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and help protect the system of government that has made our nation great in the intervening 224 years since the Constitution’s ratification!

Our goal is to present this letter to key members of the new 113th Congress and other elected officials with at least 100,000 signatures!  Click here to add your name to the Oath of Allegiance Letter:

++The Islamic infiltration continues.

Another highly relevant question about the Director’s swearing-in ceremony is, why wouldn’t John Brennan take his oath on a Bible?

As you may know from my prior messages, there are credible allegations that John Brennan converted to Islam during his prolonged tenure in the Middle East.

There are many observers who are questioning whether his alleged conversion to Islam would prevent him from taking his oath on a Bible.

Frank Gaffney, Jr., Founder and President of the Center for Security Policy, and a good friend of Liberty Counsel, says that being pro-Islam is the new litmus test for Obama appointees…

“President Obama seems to have a worrisome litmus test for staffing his new administration.  The recently installed Secretaries of State and Defense, the White House Chief of Staff, and the CIA Director all have in common an eagerness to embrace our Islamist foes.”

And make no mistake, with the infiltration of Islam comes the oppressive Islamic legal code, Sharia.
++As President Ronald Reagan warned, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.”
There has never before been highly placed elected leadership in Washington, DC, whose goal is to turn our nation into a socialist state. Now, our rising generation of Americans who has seen nothing else doesn’t view that approach as a negative!

Today’s radical Leftists believe they know better than our nation’s Founders – that the Constitution is somehow outdated and/or irrelevant.

CNN’s Piers Morgan recently declared, “Both the Bible and the Constitution were well intentioned but they are basically, inherently flawed. Hence, the need to amend it.”

++The “Progressive Left’s” vision for our nation is diametrically opposed to that of our Founders.

As Liberty Counsel has consistently stated, there is a distinct pattern to the Left’s attacks on the constitutionally prescribed checks and balances at the heart of our government.

”Liberal Progressives” are systematically attacking the constitutional principles of individual freedom and conscience protection as unworthy of being given precedence over the so-called needs of the State!

In the pivotal year 2013, the biggest check to the ascent of the Left is an enlightened American citizenry championing the Constitution!

++Thank you for standing with us!

As a signer of Liberty Counsel’s Oath of Allegiance Letter, you know how imperative it is that we get our elected officials to take notice of this grassroots American uprising in support of our freedoms and liberties as defined in the Constitution.

That’s why I want to amass as many signatures as possible and deliver as many Oath Letters as possible.
Gordon, you can provide additional help in two ways.

We would like to deliver the Oath of Allegiance Letter to all 535 representatives and senators on Capitol Hill, including your Arkansas senators and representative.

With a special gift to Liberty Counsel to cover the hand delivery costs, you can ensure that your elected officials will receive your copy of the Oath of Allegiance Letter and be given an opportunity to sign one of their own.

We must compel our elected leaders to reaffirm their allegiance to the Constitution before our rights to speak out disagree with and petition the exercise religious own a firearm to defend ourselves...and other crucial rights, as guaranteed in the Bill of Rights disappear forever!

God bless you and God bless America!

Mat Staver, Founder and Chairman
Liberty Counsel

P.S. Was John Brennan’s choice to take his oath on a version of the Constitution missing the Bill of Rights intentional or coincidental?  Only he can answer that question – but it speaks to a very disturbing pattern we are seeing within the Obama administration and his Leftist supporters.

From the undermining of our Constitution to the infiltration of pro-Islam government officials, which will surely open the door for the penetration of Sharia into our own system of justice, these are dangerous trends that must be confronted!

Please consider making a special gift today to ensure that your Arkansas officials receive your Oath – and encouragement to sign one of their own!

Again, God bless you!

Did Obama Appoint a Muslim to Head the CIA?

(Dr. Jerome R. Corsi) – Why did John Brennan take his oath to be CIA director on a draft copy of the Constitution that did not include the Bill of Rights?  Was this a way to avoid having to take the oath on the Bible?  Was it a way of Brennan signaling he does not support the first ten amendments to the Constitution because he does not believe in or endorse the freedoms defined there.

In a speech delivered August 9, 2009, to the Center for Strategic and International Studies that is archived on the White House website, Brennan commented that using “a legitimate term, ‘jihad,’ meaning to purify oneself or to wage a holy struggle for a moral goal” to describe terrorists “risks reinforcing the idea that the United States is somehow at war with Islam itself.”

SPECIAL: Bypass the Lame Stream Media! Expose The Truth About ‘America’s Fraud President’ to UNLIMITED Households!

Brennan advised that United States foreign policy should encourage greater assimilation of the Hezbollah terrorist organization into the Lebanese government.

In a July 2008 article in The Annals, a publication of the American Academy of Political and Social Sciences, Brennan argued it “would not be foolhardy, however, for the United States to tolerate, and even to encourage, greater assimilation of Hezbollah into Lebanon’s political system, a process that is subject to Iranian influence.”

Brennan continued: “Hezbollah is already represented in the Lebanese parliament and its members have previously served in the Lebanese cabinet, reflections of Hezbollah’s interest in shaping Lebanon’s political future from within government institutions.  This involvement is a far cry from Hezbollah’s genesis as solely a terrorist organization dedicated to murder, kidnapping and violence.”

At the August 2009 press conference for the CSIS, Brennan declared, “Hezbollah started out as purely a terrorist organization back in the early ‘80s and has evolved significantly over time.  And now it has members of parliament, in the cabinet; there are lawyers, doctors, others who are part of the Hezbollah organization.”

Middle Eastern terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah frequently maintain civilian units of doctors and lawyers in order to emphasize their outreach with local politicians and to increase their political acceptance in the international arena.

Conceivably, the Istanbul-based Foundation for Human Rights and Freedoms and Humanitarian Relief, better known by the Turkish acronym IHH, would fit into Brennan’s definition of the charitable side of organizations such as Hezbollah,  ties to al-Qaeda that have been amply documented by experts such as former investigating judge Jean-Louis Bruguiere, who led the French judiciary’s counter-terrorism unit for nearly two decades before retiring in 1977.

Despite this history, IHH is not included on the State Department’s current list of 45 groups  designated as foreign terrorist organizations that names both Hezbollah and Hamas.

In his speech to the New York University law school students posted on YouTube by the White House, Brennan included a lengthy statement in Arabic that he did not translate for his English-speaking audience.

Noting that he spent time spent as an undergraduate with the American University in Cairo during the 1970s, Brennan proceeded to use only the Arabic name, “Al Quds,” when referring to Jerusalem, commenting that during his 25-year in government he spent considerable time in the Middle East, as a political officer with the State Department and as a CIA station chief in Saudi Arabia.

“In Saudi Arabia, I saw how our Saudi partners fulfilled their duty as custodians of the two holy mosques in Mecca and Medina,” he said.  “I marveled at the majesty of the Haj and the devotion of those who fulfilled their duty as Muslims of making that pilgrimage.”

In 2010, Brennan participated in a meeting with Muslim law students that was facilitated by the Islamic Society of North America, a group that was named as unindicted co-conspirator in a case where the founders of Holy Land Foundation of Texas were given life sentences “for funneling $12 million” to Hamas, the group currently in political control of the Gaza.

At this 2010 meeting in New York,  Brennan declared himself a “citizen of the world,” who believed the United States government should never engage in “profiling” in pursuit of national security.

While the U.S. Senate may have chosen to ignore Brennan’s obvious tilt toward Islam, it is doubtful radical Muslims in the Middle East and around the world missed the point.

What does it mean? Can an oath be taken on anything BUT the bible? If anything else is used the procedure is called an "affirmation". What's going on here?

Is the notion of our nation no longer in need of the ultimate in respect and recognition to our nation "UNDER GOD"? Even the interloper Obama swore on a stack of bibles!

JW Files Two New Lawsuits against Obama Administration over Benghazi Secrecy

Six months have passed since the 9/11 attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, which killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans, and we are no closer to the truth about what happened. And there is only one reason – Obama secrecy.

You’ve watched the Obama administration trot out witnesses before congressional committees investigating the attacks. You’ve watched Obama officials make the rounds on the Sunday morning talk shows. But all we have in the end is more lies and more stonewalling and more broken promises to “get to the bottom of it.”

And then there’s the effort by the Obama administration to shield the documentary evidence from the American people. This is where Judicial Watch is focusing its attention. We recently filed two lawsuits against the Obama State Department to try to gain access to records that could shed light on what happened that day, who responded, and how.

First, we sued the State Department seeking “all videos and photographs” depicting the Benghazi, Libya, Consulate between September 10 and September 13, 2012, the period leading up to, during, and immediately following the deadly attack.

The Obama Admin, NY Times, and the Islamist

Michael Youssef

The Obama Admin, NY Times, and the Islamist

Not only is The New York Times editorial page known for often being thin on facts, it is known for its cheerleading of the Obama administration—especially the administration’s shortsightedness regarding the Middle East.

To prove that point, they recently published their March 4 editorial: Egypt Needs to Act. In the course of attempting to make their argument, the Times not only butchered the facts, they praised the terrible decision by the Obama administration to hand Egypt wads of US money. Go figure.

They hailed Obama’s decision to send $250 million of hard-earned, taxpayer money to the Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt as “a vote of confidence in a country that is critical to stability in the region . . .”

That quarter of billion dollars would have produced better results if it had been reduced to ashes in the treasury department’s incinerator. You may think that is an exaggeration, but think about it: The money will be handed out to the brotherhoods cronies and to enable them to continue buying tear gas to blind true freedom-loving young people who have been peacefully demonstrating against Egypt’s new dictatorship. The dictatorship is Islamist and not secular, which pleases President Obama, so the money gets forwarded without restraint.

The US government has given money to foreign countries in the past for various reasons. But when previous seasoned politicians and diplomats did that, it was usually tied to concrete demands that were consistent with American values and interests. In Egypt’s case, there are no demands, no required results.

In the absence of any stipulations, the cheerleaders in The New York Times editorial page were content to reference a weak statement by Secretary of State John Kerry, saying, “Mr. Kerry urged all Egyptians to ‘come together’ to meet the country’s challenges . . .” Really?

The secular political parties in Egypt have indeed united for the sake of meeting those challenges. They recently issued five conditions for beginning a genuine dialogue with the Muslim Brotherhood government, and yet they were ignored like a barking puppy.

The editorial page was also content with the rest of Kerry’s statement, that the US is “committed not to any party, not to any one person, not to any specific political point of view.” Again, really? This is the same John Kerry who, as a senator, badgered President Mubarak to give the Islamic opposition a voice in government.

What is wrong with demanding that a government forbid its thugs from preventing Christians and other liberal groups from entering a polling booth?

What is wrong with requiring that Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi meet with Mohamed El Baradei, Amr Moussa, and other respected non-Islamist political leaders?

But the cheerleaders were content with commending Kerry’s empty words, saying that they “struck exactly the right note.”

Hard-working Americans must be very gratified to see their well-earned tax dollars turned over to Islamist militants. Our government has given our money to professional preachers of dominance and subversion, and we got was a feeble sermonette by Kerry.

Another appointed muslim put into office and our Congress and Senater are helping them.... The funny part is that if the muslims were to take full controll of the USA they would be the first ones to loose their heads lololol Then the terrorist would go for the rest of America....And that is Obama`s way to come...
