Comment by Patty on March 1, 2014 at 6:23pm: When I went to elementary school in the 60's they taught everyone to do math on their fingers. This is just that technique modified so it can be explained on a test (PARCC testing emphasizes the explanation of the answer not getting the correct answer). You could just as easily have them count on their fingers from 13 to 32 and get the answer faster but they couldn't show the work.

My mom thought that finger counting was stupid and taught me the old fashioned way. She would always laugh because there were friends of mine in high school who were cashiers (remember when there were not any computerized registers) who still had to use their fingers to count.

Someone I know has been telling me that they are using a similar whacky way to teach double digit multiplication. It involves breaking the numbers to be multiplied into addition problems. Problem is that they then tried to teach the kids long division and the kids couldn't multiply in their heads to get the long division answer.

Unfortunately you only get one chance to teach math right, so there's a whole group of lost students. Do you think they will be able to pass calculus? Do you think they will be our top mathematicians and scientists? No they are so frustrated that they will hate math and science. This is why foreigners are the majority in the US college post graduate math and science programs - our kids can't do the basics.

More and more of my friends are saying that they are glad that their kids are out of school. They had finally approached math in a logical way and kids were advanced with many starting algebra in 5th and 6th grade. So when we were finally making progress, we change what was working and go to this backwards system?

Send this math problem to Governor Rick Scott - he's up for re-election in Florida and could care less about educating our kids. Maybe he can do some Common Core math and subtract all the votes he will lose by supporting this whacky math because it equals a huge loss. Unfortunately our only alternative is Charlie Crist who applied for and put Common Core in motion last time he was governor.

And please remember that teachers are forced to teach this way or they are fired. So when they get bad scores posted in the newspaper, it just shows that the math program is a failure not that they are bad teachers. When it fails, these politicians will blame the teachers not themselves for sitting silent. And remember, this is not about the kids and it never has been, it's about everyone getting their piece of the pie and the kids are expendable.
