Gingrich: Defund NLRB in Response to Obama Appointments

Newt Gingrich on Thursday called for Congress to defund the National Labor Relations Board in retaliation for President Barack Obama¹s decision to make three recess appointments to it.

Speaking at a rally in Plymouth, N.H., the Republican presidential candidate said cutting money from the agency would be the "correct response" to Obama's move.

"The answer to an imperial president is a Congress which stands on its own rights. And the correct response to what the president just did would be for the Congress to zero out and refuse to fund the National Labor Relations Board," Gingrich said.

"The National Labor Relations Board now has a majority of members who were never confirmed by the U.S. Senate. This is a clear violation of the spirit of the law, and Congress has an obligation to defend our rights, and the correct way is the power of the purse."

Obama made the recess appointments ­ -- two Democrats and a Republican -- on Wednesday, claiming that Congress was trying to defang the agency. He employed a similar tactic to appoint Richard Cordray to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Sen. Vitter: Obama 'Shredded Constitution' on Recess Appointments

Republicans in the U.S. Senate will use at least two avenues to contest President Barack Obama’s recess appointment of Richard Cordray as the head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, U.S. Sen. David Vitter tells Newsmax in an exclusive interview.

The first, he says, “will be some sort of legal action.” And, he adds, "clearly, clearly this is going to impact other nominations."

Vitter says all four of the president’s four recent recess appointments (three new members were also placed on the National Labor Relations Board) are “illegal and unconstitutional”.

“He’s gone beyond what any president has done and really shredded the constitution in practice with regard to recess appointments.

Vitter, who serves on the Senate Banking Committee, also made it clear that he and his fellow Republicans in the Senate will do what ever they can to halt future presidential appointments.

“It’s going to lead to more fights about nominations,” Vitter says.

Another big issue concerning Vitter right now is the president’s plan to cut military spending. On Thursday, Obama announced that over the next 10 years, the growth in the defense budget will slow.

The new strategy calls for a much leaner U.S. military. Experts say that will essentially eliminate its ability to fight two major wars at once. However, the president insists that U.S. armed forces will still be able to deal with any new threats from countries like China and Iran as well as combat terrorism.

Vitter acknowledges major federal budget cuts are needed and everything should be on the table including the Pentagon. But he says he’s concerned that the current budget cuts that “the Pentagon has to swallow… really [goes] beyond fat and into muscle and into bone.”

He also says Obama now must find a “concrete proposal” to avoid deeper and more devastating cuts to the military that are set to take effect in 2013. Those cuts were triggered by a failure of the congressional super committee to cut the federal deficit by $1.2 trillion last year.

“He needs to address that, or his comments at Thursday’s news conference are just a lot of hoopla and vague talk,” Vitter says.

President Obama’s attempted recess appointments this week are blatantly unconstitutional and pose a threat to America’s constitutional structure, Heritage Foundation legal scholars Ed Meese and Todd Gaziano write in Friday’s Washington Post.

Meese and Gaziano explain:

President Obama’s attempt to unilaterally appoint three people to seats on the National Labor Relations Board and Richard Cordray to head the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (after the Senate blocked action on his nomination) is more than an unconstitutional attempt to circumvent the Senate’s advise-and-consent role. It is a breathtaking violation of the separation of powers and the duty of comity that the executive owes to Congress.

The question of recess appointments is not a political matter and is not, as the White House suggests, about “gimmicks,” Meese and Gaziano argue. Instead, it’s about the fundamental framework of government our Founders designed to protect individual liberty.

So then, It's unanimous, Obama has gone too far with his power grab and King like rule over the nation. The house holds the purse strings, cut him off! As a matter of fact, why hasn't this been done all ready to Obamacare and a host of other Obama legislative spending sprees including flying him around the country on our dime.

Ground his plane . . . .  withhold the funds for Air Force One.

What good does all the talk do?  When are our Representatives develop some backbone and start the process of Impeachment?  Obama's actions have been illegal and unconstitutional ever since he became president, yet Congress does nothing!!  That is why their polling ratings are so low.  Obama is a traitor, and the people who helped him get into office illegally are just as guilty.  Every one of these corrupt politicians and corporate execs belong in prison!  Stop the talking and start the action!  We the People are ready to fire every one of you!
