Exclusive: Good day for bad news? EU reveals new 'migrant passport' deal on referendum day

AS ALL eyes were on the British referendum tonight members of the European Parliament quietly announced a new travel document allowing migrants from outside the EU to travel within the 28 member states.

They announced their new "European travel document" just four hours before the British referendum polling stations closed.

EU mandarins said the "harmonised document" aims to reduce the period during which those without valid identity documents are held in administrative detention.

According to a report issued in Brussels at 6.09pm BST the new "travel documents" will give non-EU nationals staying "irregularly" in EU member states the right to move around.

The proposals will go before the Civil Liberties Committee as soon as next week but the EU has declined to give a date.

And it will help migrants from countries like Turkey, Syria, Egypt and others to enter the EU with ease as the migrant crisis continues to wreak havoc.

The document says: "A new standard European travel document to speed the return of non-EU nationals staying "irregularly" in EU member states without valid passports or identity cards was informally agreed by MEPs and EU ministers on Thursday evening.

"A key goal during the talks has been to increase third countries acceptance of the document through improved technical details. To enter into force, this informal deal needs to be formally endorsed by the full Parliament and the Council of Ministers.

"The new regulation will produce a common format for the European travel document.

"Its technical details would include personal information, such as name, age, gender and distinguishing marks, as well as a passport photograph, in order to combat

counterfeiting and falsification."

According to the announcement the Parliament also negotiated clear references in the new regulation to respect for international law, the Charter of fundamental rights, and the rights of the Child.

It states: "The purpose of the new regulation is to remove some of the reasons why the travel document is not always used by member states or recognised by the third countries.

"By using the same security features laid down in 2002 for visas issued by EU countries, the document's recognition should be enhanced and the administrative burdens reduced for both EU and destination countries' authorities.

"Parliament asks EU and member states to promote the use of this harmonised document in the context of readmission agreements reached with third countries. MEPs also stress

the need for EU countries to enhance cooperation with third countries' diplomatic representations on this issue.

"At Parliament's request, the deal also includes a guarantee that competent authorities issuing the updated travel document will have to take into account any relevant technical developments in the future.

"The same authorities will also provide more attached information, as well as translations of the new travel document, should it be required."

But the news has angered UK politicians who believe the proposals were deliberately announced on referendum day to avoid widespread coverage.

Mike Hookem MEP said "How convenient that they chose this evening, with polls now closed, to discuss a proposal to make it even easier for migrants to get into the EU.

"These people are not only misleading the voters of Great Britain but making life easier for people traffickers.

"We can add this to a long list of EU power grabs and new laws which will come rushing in following today - things like the coastguard and border control and the multi billion pound EU budget they kept away from the headlines to bolster the remain side's ludicrous claims that the EU is not about (creating a superstate). 

"I can only hope that the results reveal the British people's faith in their country retaking its place on the world stage but should we get a remain vote then there are politicians who took part in the scaremongering and deceit who will need to consider their positions and if they are fit to hold public office once the Leave side have been proven right with the aims and intentions of the EU and the inconsequence of Cameron's so-called 'reforms'."
