State Department Retreats From Eliminating Mother And Father

Last week there was more idiocy from the US State Department.
This time they moved to remove the words Mother and Father from State Dept. d...
They wanted to just have Parent 1 and Parent 2.
Sort of like Dr. Seuss's Thing 1 and Thing 2, I suppose.

They said:

The words "mother" and "father" will be removed from U.S. passport applications and replaced with gender neutral terminology, according to the State Dept.

"The words in the old form were ‘mother' and ‘father'," said Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Passport Services Brenda Sprague. "They are now ‘parent one' and ‘parent two.'

A statement on the State Department website noted: "These improvements are being made to provide a gender neutral description of a child's parents and in recognition of different types of families."

Gender neutral?
You mean people are being born without a mother and a father?

Oh right... it was to recognize "non-traditional" families.

“Changing the term mother and father to the more global term of parent allows many different types of families to be able to go and apply for a passport for their child without feeling like the government doesn’t recognize their family,” said Jennifer Chrisler, executive director of Family Equality Council.

If they are so concerned about upsetting the smaller percentage of families that do not have a traditional mother or father, then why don't they just leave mother and father as it is and ADD the words, "or Parent 1 and Parent 2" ?

and can you imagine the confusion that would ensue in traditional families?
Who is parent 1 and who is parent 2?
Would the State Department have created protocol and rules as to who was who?
Would fights ensue?
Father - "I want to be parent 1".
Mother - "No, I want to be parent 1 - you were parent 1 last time".
Father - "But I don't want to be parent 2 - that means I am second and lower than you".
Mother - " Well, that is why I don't want to be parent 2, besides, I am the breadwinner".
It could have gotten ugly.

Yes - and that would have been just as ludicrous as that new ruling was.

How about MY right to be called Mother and my husband's right to be called Father?
How about the fact that I might feel that MY status as a parent was not being respected by the State Department?
Why yield our rightful titles to this PC nonsense?
Why eliminate important information from important documents? (i.e. Mother and Father)

Thankfully, Hillary Rodham Clinton stepped in to prevent a massive backlash (and probably the specter of less funding for her department) from legislators and has changed the ruling:

In a bid to forestall a backlash from congressional conservatives, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has ordered the State Department to amend a bureaucratic change that would have eliminated the titles "mother" and "father" with the gender-neutral term "parent" in reports of overseas births.

The State Department said Saturday that Clinton had instructed the department to retain "mother" and "father" in a form known as a "Consular Report of Birth Abroad" that U.S. embassies use to document the birth of a child to expatriate Americans. It said the form will now ask for the names of the child's "mother or parent 1" and "father or parent 2."

That is wording we can all live with.
(Glad they took my advice!)
