Fort Lauderdale - Outside, hundreds of people gathered for democracy
YouTube style — with shouting and hostility from dueling camps.

Inside, it was mostly calm — more like a civics seminar and sales pitch for the country's health care overhaul law.

The dueling scenes were part of U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz's town hall meeting Monday evening. The Weston Democrat was in the eastern part of her district to discuss health care and the economy.

Jonathan Deeb, of Fort Lauderdale, an opponent of the new health care law, held a bright yellow "don't tread on me" flag popular among people in the tea party movement.

"I'm flying this flag because I want them to know American individualism is alive and well," he said. "The state is not in control of everyone's lives and decisions."

Helene Licursi, of Pompano Beach, was holding an "electile dysfunction" sign. The other side said "Seniors! Speak up now or shut up and die!"

"I don't believe in what [ President Barack] Obama's doing," she said. "What he wants to do is corrupt our United States. He's turning everything around and making it a socialist country."

Jonathan Abramson, of Coconut Creek, is working with the new coffee party, a group formed in response to the tea party movement. Members say they want a more civil dialog.

"Government does some things that work," he said. "I'm here just to show my support for Debbie."

Many of the protesters opposed to both health care law and the Democrats carried American flags and taunted their counterparts for not displaying flags.

Inside, Wasserman Schultz didn't give any ground on the patriotism front. Before the town hall meeting started, she presented an award — with a flag slide as a backdrop — to Bill Kling, president of the Broward Veterans Affairs Council.

Wasserman Schultz said people would be getting more health care choices at lower cost. "For far too long it's been insurance companies in the driver's seat."

Some in the audience disagreed. One man from Weston said the health care bill would
"bankrupt the United States."

As the event began, Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler made a plea for civil discussion.

And organizers attempted to enforced civility. As people entered the room, if they wanted to ask questions they put their names in one of three boxes: support, oppose, neutral. During the Q&A part of the town hall, about 15 questions were pulled in turn from each box.

It didn't always work.

One woman asked Wasserman Schultz to "defend the dirty deals on this health care deal." Wasserman Schultz responded that
"there certainly were no such dirty deals."

When several in the audience booed, Wasserman Schultz asked the crowd to be respectful.

Mark Pilling of Cooper City yelled out: "You're not being respectful to us when you lie to the American people." Fort Lauderdale police officers ordered him to leave the room.

The overflow crowd outside listened on loudspeakers. When the back door was opened so a questioner could come in, people outside sometimes shouted "you lie" or "liar."

The crowd inside, which topped 250, was more friendly. Most gave her a standing ovation when she arrived and when she finished.
