Biography

I have lived in Sarasota with my husband Andy since 1988. Both of our sons attended Sarasota County public schools until graduating Sarasota High School.

I have remained current with the issues affecting our education and our local schools. I am confident that I would be an asset to our School Board.

Personal Information	My thoughts on running for School Board: Our students are falling behind internationally, and there is now a trend toward national corporate education in an effort to remedy this. This has resulted in top-down mandates and trends toward uniformity. High stakes standardized testing is tending to narrow the curriculum as teachers are increasingly teaching to the test. Ultimately, this would logically lead to a restricted educational experience for the student as there is only so much time in a day to teach. In some cases, this has resulted in discordance between parents and professional teachers around the country. The imposition of external educational mandates on our community can lead to confusion between parents and our School Board. External mandates that come with financial implications can be especially vexing to manage. It is imperative that our community trust that the School Board will act in the best interest of our school district as a whole. It is critical the Board and Administration clearly communicate to the community with transparency regarding the decisions being made and the reasoning behind those decisions. I believe in the quality of Sarasota County public education. I know that I can provide a positive input and a fresh perspective that is needed given the changes we are now seeing nationally. "Knowing how this job is done" is not a guarantee of getting things done better or more efficiently. New, vibrant, and viable ideas and vision on how the community's educational needs can be met will be enhanced by new members of the School Board willing to take up the challenge.
