Desecration of the Temple--American Style

In the sleepy little town of Meadville, Pa., rests Allegheny College’s Ford Memorial Chapel, built in 1902, where Catholic and non-denominational Christian services are held each week for students and the community. This week, however, the chapel was transformed by several campus student groups into a sex education festival entitled, “I Heart the Female Orgasm.” “Educators” got very graphic in the art of pleasing oneself sexually, condoms were distributed, and Biblical stories of chastity were debunked. T-Shirts, books, and hats were sold as the chapel was turned into what The College Fix (college newspaper) called a “sexual marketplace of sorts.”

In Luke 20:46, Jesus threw the money changers out of the temple, saying, “My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.” Chaplain Jane Ellen Nickel, who conducts Christian services at the chapel every Sunday, views the sex event as an evangelical tool. She told The College Fix, “I don’t have a problem with it being held in the chapel. The program advocates responsible, respectful decision-making regarding sexual behavior, and includes the option waiting for marriage, a message that resonates with many students of faith. While the name may have some shock value, the event itself is consistent with our policy of opening the building to campus groups. We would love it if students at such an event experience the chapel as a welcoming space, and then feel encouraged to attend a religious service or program.”

Daniel 11:31 prophesies “And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that makes desolate.” This prophecy was fulfilled in part some 355 years after Daniel wrote it by Antiochus IV Epiphanes, who sacked Jerusalem in 167 BC, banned the Jewish religion, killed over 80,000 Jewish men, women, and children, enslaved another 40,000, and defiled the temple by sacrificing a pig on the altar and scattering its juice and blood throughout the sanctuary and vessels. Antiochus IV is widely considered a type of the yet to come Antichrist.

We know that the prophecy in Daniel was partially fulfilled by Antiochus IV, an Assyrian, and is also yet to be fulfilled by the Antichrist because Jesus Christ mentions this as a future event in the Olivet Discourse when discussing the end times. In Matthew 24:15-21, Jesus says, “When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains...For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no more ever shall be.” Given the desensitization of the sanctuary by society such as Allegheny College, who will care when the Antichrist desecrates the temple? I’m sure God will.
